Slickline – single strand wire that is made of Mild steel. Sizes range from
0.072” to >0.125.”
Braided Line – multiple strand wire braided to form a single cable that is also non-Conducting.
Electric Line (E-Line) – this is a multiple stand wire armor cable around a single insulated electrical conductor wire.
Specialty cable – many forms of multiple conductor wires in armored or insulated cable.
Major workover with wireline
common liquid and fill tags
gauge running and quick retrieval
gas lift valve replacements
plug and packer settings
All the plugs must be equalized before they can be released.
Pressure may be trapped in several equipment’s & well-bore configuration.
In case pressure is trapped, it can propel an equipment up the well in a rapid manner causing pipe damage or wellhead. Sometimes its also possible to have birds nests of wire that tend to be very difficult and extremely expensive to remove.
Theoretical loads are measured in lbs and they result from pressure differentials when different plugs are measured.

In most cases, it is important to release the trapped pressure before anything else can be done. This reduces the risk and also ensures that the tools run safely. One common element on all plugs is to release the pressure below plug before one can release the locking mechanism that is normally on the plug.
Nominal Weight of Wire. Several wires vary in lb and the following is common nominal weight for most used wires.
Wire Size (Wt per 1000 ft of wire)
- 0.072 14 lb
0.082 18 lb
0.092 22.6 lb
0.108 31 lb
0.125 44 lb
Choosing a Wireline
You should be able to consider the following before choosing a wireline. Every wireline functions well if you know the type of device to use, the force required and the various tubing sizes that you will need.
What devices need to be pulled (loads, weights)?
What impact forces are required?
What are the various tubing sizes or what tubing size is required?
Small tubing and wires are normally easier to work with and can be recovered easily. They can also be compressed into a mass for easy retrieval compared to large tubing. Unlike the small tubing and wires, the large wire and tubing are strong and less likely to kink or bird-nest. Its simple and one can use them to fish as a single strand. However, they are hard when it comes to compressing them into one massive wireline.
